Prem Lama of Sanga in Kavre was ridiculed when he established Ashapuri Organic Farm eight years ago. Spread across five hectares, the farm now produces 30 kg of vegetables daily helping Prem earn Rs 1.5 million each month from the sale of 60 varieties of vegetables and fruits in Kathmandu and Singapore. "There is a high demand for mushroom and yakon (ground apple) in Singapore," says Lama.
Govinda Sharma of Pattale Khet has also found a niche in the international market. Many farmers in Kavre have been inspired by Sharma and Lama’s success stories and have made Kavre the epicenter of organic farming in Nepal.
Just a few years ago farmers were heavily dependent on chemical fertilizers for protection against pests and to increase production from small area. But with increasing awareness about the adverse effects of chemical fertilizers, farmers have changed their ways. Kavre annually produces 150,000 tons of fruits and vegetables half of which is sold in Kathmandu, and the rest exported.

Mr. Navin Gopal Pradhan has cultivated organic and conventional vegetable in about 12 ropanis and 31 ropanis respectively (own land and taken on lease). Major vegetables produced in his farm include cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, tomato, carrot, radish, potato, cucumber, garden pea, soybean, onion, garlic, okra, brinjal, bitter gourd, sponge gourd, summer squash, pumpkin, cucumber, hot pepper, sweet pepper, broad leaf mustard, coriander, spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard. He supplies organic vegetables to the diplomats and foreigners living in Katmandu city.

Mr. Prem Lama has registered Asapuri Organic Pvt. Ltd. and has been producing vegetables, mushroom and medicinal plants in 10 hectares of land (own land and hired).

Late senior innovative apple grower Mr. Padam Bahadur Mahat initiated commercial apple farming in 5.5 ha of own land at Narki Swada Santi Kunja after his retirement. He produced about 50 metric tons of fresh organic apples from his orchard with an average annual income of one million Nepalese Rupees. The cost benefit ratio for organic production was relatively higher (1:2).

Douglas started to cultivate organic method of farming in his four acres to sustain his own family. But now, he, himself has provided employment to eight full time employees.
